23 November 2023
On the 13th of November 2023, the Reimagining Reproduction project convened a one-day conference entitled “ Family Matters: Reproduction and Care in Africa” at the Sovereign Hotel in Kisumu City. New questions about the relationship between family, care and reproduction in Africa came to the fore in the presentations given at the conference. In particular, the various conceptions, configurations and meanings of “family” and their impact on reproduction and care were discussed from various geographical, socio-economic, gendered, generational and religious points of view. The conference was attended by scholars from the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Maseno University, independent scholars and post-graduate students. The key address was delivered by Professor Simuyi Wandibba.
Feedback from participants;
The conference was interesting, provocative and such a safe space to think and collaborate. Key concepts I learned today include “filial responsibility”, how the living are indebted to the dead and the notion of voluntary/deliberate childlessness and its links to ecological challenges/ concerns. THANK YOU!
This is a great informative. Helped reflect on various things, which are often taken for granted. Bringing the workshop to Kenya’s peripheral city is very constructive for post-graduate students, researchers and practitioners who would not be reached if this were in Nairobi or outside the country.
I so much appreciate this forum. I have realised that there is so, so much more areas of research. I have gained very valuable insights as far as research is concerned. I am super excited about my research journey. ASANTE SANA!
Hi. I loved the session. I am a master’s student of Anthropology; I hope next year’s conference is open to people like me. I would love to learn as much as I did. My take home is on climate, care and technology. Thank you!!
